ROMEO AND JULIET -
Thursday 15, Friday 16 and Saturday 17 July 2010 Evening performances at 7pm. Saturday Matinee, 2.30 pm
With kind permission of the Dean and Chapter of St Edmundsbury Cathedral
An outdoor production is a new venture for the company. With the blessing of the British weather this should be an exciting and memorable evening.
Romeo and Juliet, the tragic teenage lovers, will be brought to life on a stage inspired by Shakespeare’s Globe, in a lavishly costumed production featuring songs and dances of the period. If it is love at first sight for Romeo and Juliet, their families hate each other with an equal passion. The brawling Montagues and Capulets will execute finely choreographed fight sequences with replica rapiers and daggers. The mood of the play swings extravagantly between bawdy comedy, ferocious violence, tender sexuality and almost unbearable sadness.
Director Tim Lodge says: “ Shakespeare shows us what a wonderful, powerful and terrifying thing love can be. And how spectacularly he does this! Romeo and Juliet’s love for each other ends up with the deaths of five beautiful young people. “We think it's important to understand that throughout history people have always felt these things. That's why we offer you an Elizabethan production of Romeo and Juliet from when it was written, 1595.”
Romeo and Juliet will be performed on Thursday 15, Friday 16 and Saturday 17 July 2010, with evening performances at 7pm and a Saturday matinee at 2pm. Spectators will be admitted up to 45 minutes before the show begins, and may bring a picnic to enjoy in the beautiful setting of the Cathedral Garth. NB: No glasses please - plastic cups only. Friends of the Cathedral Choir will be selling drinks (wine and fruit juice) in the Refectory. Tickets cost £13 (Seated) or £7 (Groundlings - bring a picnic blanket) with a discount (£11/£5) for group bookings of more than 10 people.
